AODA Legislation Review

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) was reviewed in 2010.

Since then, a new regulation has been added creating standards for accessible information and communications; accessible transportation; accessible employment; the built environment, purchasing and kiosks including point-of-sale devices.

Now the AODA is being reviewed again. Citizens With Disabilities – Ontario (CWDO) is preparing a response to this consultation. To develop our response, we would like to know what you, our members, think about the legislation.

Please answer the survey questions on the AODA. You may skip any question you wish. None of your answers will be saved until you click the Submit button at the end of the survey. If you need an alternate format of the survey, please let us know using our Contact Form. It will take you about 5-10 minutes to complete the survey, or longer if you have a lot of comments.

Do you support including any of these health care standards? :

Limit wait times for attendant services and home care

Require consumer involvement in decisions that impact care or other health services

Require accessible examination equipment

Require health information to be provided in alternate formats

Require training for medical practitioners

Provide stronger protections for consumers of attendant services

What else should be included in a health care standard?:

Do you support including any of these education standards? :

Limit wait times for alternate formats

Require physical accessibility to all school buildings

Require the provision of specialized support services that meet educational needs

Require educational institutions to provide support in both specialized and integrated settings

Create a dedicated, post-secondary educational institution geared for students and faculty who use ASL (American Sign Language)

What else should be included in an education standard?:

Do you support including any of these built environment standards? :

Require all residential housing to have a level entrance

Require the main floor of residential housing to include an accessible washroom and bedroom

Require that an elevator shaft be roughed in

Require all high-rise housing units to include accessible washrooms and level thresholds

Require all high-rise housing units to include accessible parking, laundry facilities and amenities

Check as many as you wish.

What else should be included in a built environment standard?:

Given the unacceptably high rate of unemployment among people with disabilities, should the AODA:

Require that a central employment accommodation fund be established to support people with disabilities to work in the community?

Set quotas for hiring people with disabilities?

Remove age limits for employment programs for people with disabilities?

Maintain medical benefits for people with disabilities indefinitely when they begin working and their job does not provide benefits?

Provide wage subsidies for employers who hire people with disabilities?
